How do I get rid of beetles and weevils in Cairns?

In short, spraying the adults you can see won’t fix it. Beetles and weevils keep coming back until the breeding source is found, whether that’s an infested packet, a lawn full of grubs or damp timber. A licensed technician identifies the species, removes or treats the source, and treats the areas they’re breeding in so the next generation doesn’t hatch.

Hiddenmost of the damage is done by larvae you never see, inside grain, soil or timber.
Year-roundtropical humidity means several breeding cycles a year in Cairns, not just one season.
Spreadone infested product can seed a whole pantry, and lawn grubs can move through the whole yard.
Spot the problem early

Six signs of a beetle or weevil problem.

These pests are good at hiding. If you notice any of these around a Cairns home or business, it’s time to have it looked at.

Tiny bugs in dry food

Small brown or black beetles in rice, flour, pasta, cereal or pet food, or crawling on pantry shelves.

Webbing or dust in packets

Clumped flour, fine powder or tiny holes in packaging are signs larvae are feeding inside.

Brown, dying lawn patches

Turf that lifts like carpet and has C-shaped white grubs underneath, often after the wet season.

Holes in timber

Small round exit holes and fine powdery dust (frass) on timber furniture, floors or framing.

Damage to fabrics & rugs

Irregular holes in wool, carpet or stored clothing, often with tiny bristly larvae nearby.

Swarms at the lights

Beetles crowding outdoor lights on warm nights, often a sign grubs are breeding in the lawn or garden.

Spotted the signs? Book an inspection. Don’t keep spraying the adults, it won’t reach the source.

Know what you have

The beetles & weevils we handle around Cairns.

Treatment depends entirely on the species. A pantry weevil needs a completely different approach to a lawn grub or a timber borer, so the first thing our technician does is identify it.

In the tropics these pests can go through several generations a year, so the sooner the source is found, the simpler the job.

Rice & grain weevils
Pantry, dry goods

Small snouted weevils that breed inside rice, grains and pasta. They often arrive in store-bought packets and spread through the pantry.

Flour & pantry beetles
Flour, cereal, pet food

Red flour beetles, cigarette beetles and drugstore beetles that infest flour, spices, cereals and stored pet food.

Carpet beetles
Rugs, wool & stored fabrics

The adults are harmless, but the larvae chew through carpet, wool, felt and stored clothing in cupboards.

Lawn & garden beetles
African black beetle, cane & Christmas beetles

Their curl grubs feed on grass and plant roots, leaving dead patches in lawns and gardens after the wet season.

Garden weevils
Banana & sweet potato weevils

Weevils that bore into banana corms and root crops, a common issue in Cairns backyard gardens and food plots.

Timber borers
Powderpost & furniture beetles

Larvae tunnel through hardwood furniture, flooring and framing, leaving small exit holes and fine powdery dust.

Beetle & weevil questions

Straight answers on beetles & weevils.

The questions Cairns locals ask us most. Not sure what you’ve got? Send a photo and we’ll tell you what it is.

Ask us anything
Where did weevils in my pantry come from?
Most pantry weevils and beetles arrive inside store-bought products like rice, flour or pet food, with eggs already present. Cairns’ warmth and humidity then let them breed quickly and spread to other packets.
Do I need to throw out all my food?
Not always. Infested products should go, but unopened and sealed items are often fine. We’ll help you work out what to keep, what to bin and how to store dry goods in sealed containers going forward.
Are beetle treatments safe for kids and pets?
Yes. We use family- and pet-safe products and apply them in a targeted way, away from food and food-prep surfaces. We’ll tell you if any areas need to be kept clear for a short time.
Why does my lawn have dead patches?
In Cairns it’s often curl grubs, the larvae of African black beetles and other lawn beetles, feeding on grass roots. If the turf lifts easily and you see white C-shaped grubs underneath, that’s the likely cause.
Are timber borers the same as termites?
No. Borers are beetle larvae that tunnel through timber and leave small round exit holes and fine dust, while termites work hidden inside timber and build mud leads. If you’re unsure, we’ll inspect and tell you which you’re dealing with.
Will they come back?
Pantry and garden beetles can be reintroduced through new products or neighbouring yards. Removing the source, treating the breeding areas and following our storage and prevention advice makes a return far less likely.
